By age 5, I was listening to The Doors, Blood, Sweat & Tears,
CCR, The Beatles, Sly & The Family Stone, and The Beach Boys. Somehow, I always
gravitated to the bass lines. Other influences over the years include Stanley Clarke
/ RTF, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Miles Davis, Tony Williams, Pat Metheny, Bunny Brunel, Jimi
Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Collective Soul, Police, Pretenders, Suzanne Vega, Heart, Elvis
Costello, Allman Brothers, Santana, and many others.
By age 15, I had my first bass lesson right-handed, since I didnt yet
own a bass. What an unnatural experience. I probably would have been just as well off
trying to play with my feet. Not accustomed to left-handed players, one of my early
bass teachers had to set up a full-length mirror in order to teach me. While growing
up in California (both Southern and Northern), I played in multiple bands.
After a year at UC Davis, I decided to transfer to Berklee where I earned my Bachelors.
Since then, Ive been living in the Boston area, playing in all original rock
bands. Several had gained local notoriety, getting local airplay, including Vision
Corps, World Gone Crazy, and Torian (album called Ring of Air). Currently, Im
in a new iteration of an orignal band called Winterboy. The music carries a variety
of influences, including straight driving rock, funk, jazz, latin, and middleastern.
Were planning to hit the studio late summer / early fall.
I own three basses: 74 Fender Jazz, 77 Fender Precision and 79 Image
Guitars (Peter Max Baranet). Rigs have varied over the years, but have included Acoustic
320 / 406, Randall preamp, Randall power amp, Intersound IVP preamp, Mitchell folder
horn cabinet with Gauss driver, SWR pre-Fender combo, and Genz Benz. I try not to rely
on effects (the less that can go wrong, the better), but still have my vintage Dan
Armstrong Orange Squeezer and Yellow Humper. |
