I first picked up a bass at the age of 20 --I'm 25 now-- but never
actually started playing left-handed. My friends wanted to start a band, and needed
a bassist. That and the fact being there is a large number of people you come across
playing the guitar I decided to rebel and pick up the bass.
I lent my friends right-handed bass (I forget what make it was) and tried it out.
As I was getting my bearings around the whole thing for about 4 month, my mate convinced
me that since I was a south paw, it was probably a better idea I got a left-handed
bass.
I first went on ebay and bought a bundle package: amp, guitar, strings, etc, etc.
£150 -what a bargain I thought- didn't want to spend a large sum of money on
something I might not get into. Well, I found out the hard way, you get what you paid
for. haha It was awful: heavy, fret buzz on every fret, the thing was a shamble. The
only thing that was good about it was the make of it, the 'BlueRock'.
After learning a hard lesson, I decided my first 'proper' bass would be a Squier
P-bass. I played with that for about a year and enjoyed playing it. Then Invested more
money into an Ibanez SR-500 -which is currently my preferred axe of choice.
Gear:
Currently I have my Ibanez SR-500 (mohogany), a 'Vintage' Squire Jazz bass (which
I fully recommend as they are awesome!) -which will soon have 'Bare Knuckle' pick-ups
on it. I have a 300Watt combo, Laney RB8, which I will be trading in soon for an Orange
1000Watt Terror head and an Orange Smart Power 2X12 cab.
Bands:
I've only ever been in two proper bands. One was an experimental band that sounded
like Fugazi and Rancid having a baby. Now I'm currently in a hard-rock band called
State of Reality, which sounds like Queens of the Stone age meets Led Zepplin.
And I'm in the process of starting a new experimental band, just need a new drummer.
