I have been playing bass since I was seven (now 40). My equipment has ranged
from my first bass (a Sears Catalogue 4 stringer) to a BBN5L-BLK Yamaha. This is my
first five string bass and I love it. I no longer have to drop tune my E which is nice.
My influences include Geddy Lee, Stu Hamm as well as a ton of other progressive rock
bass players. I grew up listening to the stuff my parents were into - country-western
/ irish / old rock. I think listening to and playing this type of music as a kid gave
me an advantage over those who chose to listen to only one type of music. It taught
me how to see notes on a bass. I learn most of my music without even picking up my
bass. I can then fine tune each song where necessary.
My daughter who also plays left handed is great at reading tabs. I have had a hard
time trying to read tab because up until recently all of my bass guitars were strung
right handed. In other words I was playing upside down (E on bottom and G on top).
When I purchased my new Yamaha, I did not change the strings and have since taught
myseld how to play a true left handed bass. Needless to day this was somewhat difficult
but I have managed to get by. I do get confused at times but for the most part I would
say I am doing ok.
Since I now play a true left handed bass I am going to give tabs a chance. My ear is
pretty good so I have not had to worry about being able to read. I feel being able
to follow tab will only make me a better playing in the end.
My dream is to own a Ricky someday...
